The Fort Kochi beach clean-up event successfully took place on 11 February 2023 in association with Ms Aparna Mulberry (Social media content creator) and Djunk, a waste management company.
35 volunteers participated and collected a total of 486 kg of waste. The collected waste was segregated into three different categories - plastics, glass waste and metal waste. Plastic waste constituted almost 40% of the total waste collected. Glass waste was the second highest category of waste collected.
The amount of plastic waste collected was mainly found near the food vendors. It could be assumed that the plastic littering observed at this part of the beach was mainly due to littering by tourists and from the lack of waste bins set around these vendors.
The glass waste collected mainly consisted of glass bottles which may have washed up from the sea or might have been littered onto the beach by the tourists and locals. The recyclable items collected by the volunteers were sent to Djunk for closed-loop recycling.
We would like to thank Ms Aparna Mulberry and Djunk Waste management for their support in making this beach cleanup a successful event.
