Training of Trainers (ToT) on Material Flow Analysis: Feb 2023

02/03/2023

On 23 February 2023, online Training of Trainers workshop was held for the project team from all focus countries. 18 team members participated in the training which was facilitated by Mr. Paolo Facco, Senior Advisor, adelphi.

The focus of the training was to equip the project team with knowledge about Material Flow Analysis (MFA) activities under the PROMISE project. The training started with an overview of the MFA toll and how it can support the identification of sources and sinks of waste in the project’s pilot areas. The activities and the lessons learned from the MFA PROMISE activities conducted in Year 2 were discussed. Based on the activities’ outcomes and lessons learned the new refined MFA methodology has been explained in detail. The MFA activities include beach sampling to identify the types and amount of litter present in the selected pilot beaches, and in-depth stakeholder interviews with key MSMEs, local waste management departments, waste management companies, informal collectors, and NGOs.

In the workshop participants learned how to prepare and conduct the beach samplings, and which key quantitative and qualitative data must be collected via the interviews. Participants expressed a very positive response about the workshop and mentioned that the workshop has increased their knowledge and capacities in conducting the MFA’s activities. As a next step, in the coming months, each project team will conduct the beach samplings and interviews in the new pilot location in its country.
