SRI LANKA: Beach CleanUpactivity at the Calido Beach, Kalutara, Sri Lanka

The beach cleanup was organized to commemorate the World Environment Day and to kick off Promise Beach Cleanup activities in Sri Lanka. Event was collaborated by  Royal Palms Beach Hotel, Kalutara and Parley Sri Lanka.  Eco spindles Pvt Ltd joined with the event as recycling partner.  Over 68 volunrerrs were participated for this beach cleanup representig NCPC SL staff and family members, Staff of  Royal Palms Beach Hotel, Students representing Sri Lanka Girls Guide Association and other volunteers.

South Calido beach, Kalutara  a West coast beach site was selected as the cleanup site for this kick-off event. This site becomes very polluted from river washups during the rainy season (South-west monsoon) since it is the river mouth for ‘Kalu River‘, one of the mjor river in Sri Lanka.

Beach stretch with 500 m x 80 m extent was selected for the cleanup due to the volunteer capacity and allocated time for the event. Beach was at highly polluted condition on the day we had the clenup event since there was a heavy falls a day before.

We reahed the site by 7:15am and the event was started with the welcome note delevered by Mr. Samantha Kumarasena, CEO – NCPC SL followed by the awareness and guidance given by Parley SL.

Together we were able to collect, sort and dispose 350 kg of marine litter (glass 134 kg, Hard plastic 91 kg, other plastic 69kg, metal 18 kg, rubber & other 38 kg) filled in 72 no’s of gunny bags.

Collected lot of plastic waste was handed over to the representative of Ecospindle pvt ltd and others to the garbage collection point of the Urban Council. The event was concluded with an appreciation note delivered by Mr. Ravi, General manager of Royal Palms Beach Hotel.
