The Head of Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and Maldives Mrs. Jenny Correia, has met with the project Prevention of Marine Litter in the Lakshadweep Sea (PROMISE) consortium partners at the Maldives National University on 16 November 2021.

Mrs. Correia was welcomed by Dr. Mohamed Shareef, the Vice Chancellor of the Maldives National University. In his opening remarks, he thanked Mrs. Correia for visiting MNU and recognised the EU’s consistent support and assistance given to the Maldives to address the issues of climate change and minimizing its effect on the environment. He also thanked EUD for trusting MNU to lead the PROMISE project, which aims to contribute to the prevention and leakage of waste from land-based sources into the Lakshadweep Sea in line with sustainable consumption and production approaches.

During the meeting, Project Manager Dr Abdulla Nazeer briefed Mrs. Correia about project achievements, planned activities for year two, and the challenges that were faced during the previous year. Consortium partners from Germany, India, Sri Lanka and Maldives also provided updates regarding work package activities that they are currently implementing in individual countries.

Mrs. Correia expressed her gratitude towards project partners for the effort that they are making to implement the PROMISE project. She also recognised the challenges the countries are facing in managing plastic waste and the impact of marine litter on marine environment. Mrs. Correia also highlighted the importance of having project visibility and an effective communication plan, urging partners to disseminate project news through media.

The meeting was attended by Ms. Harshini Halangode, EUD, representatives from the consortium partners – adelphi, TERI, STENUM-Asia, NCPC, MNU, Parley Maldives – & the President of the National Boating Association of Maldives.
